What do you need to start?
In order to start renting at the common kitchen, you will need:
- Food Safe Course - This can be easily obtained in a day long class at a price of around $100.Here is a link to one food safe course provider.
- Food Service Permit - If you are renting on a monthly basis, you will need to have an annual permit from the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. You can visit them by following this link. The application is generally processed quickly and won't take more than a week or two. The cost ranges from $75 - $150 for businesses working out of the Common Kitchen. If you are only seasonally operating or are starting part way through the year, food service licences fees are pro-rated. If you are doing one-time (temporary) events, you can apply for a free permit.
- City of Vancouver Business Licence - If you are renting on a monthly basis, you will need this. The licence can be processed on the same day if you make a visit to City Hall. Fees vary depending on type of business, I've seen from $100 - $400 a year. Find out more here.
- Commercial General Liability Insurance - If you are renting on a monthly basis, you will need commercial general liability insurance to protect your business. The general liabilty insurance alone usually costs around $100 a month.
